SUPPORTING Y-HOOPS

Both Basketball and Volleyball were invented by YMCA staff in the late 1800s and that legacy lives on every time a ball hits the floor in the Russell Gymnasium at the Boothbay Regio YMCA. Built in 1967, the Russell Gymnasium was the first space constructed on the Boothbay Region YMCA’s main campus. It was built to support youth sports and give young people a place to play, grow, and belong.

With a strong community culture of basketball, the Gym is primarily used for playing Hoops. However, it has become one of the most versatile and heavily utilized spaces at the Y. It is a hub for teens to gather after school and is used for overflow pickleball courts, rollerblading, floor hockey, Y-Arts performances, youth dances, movie nights, special events, and a large space used by the Y’s youngest friends at the Harbor Montessori School. It is even utilized by businesses when large indoor space is needed, including our local sailmaker when he needs to measure and cut large scale sails on the floor.

Refreshing the Russell Gymnasium is a priority capital project to enhance the experience of everyone who uses the gym. Here is the plan:

PHASE I: RAISE $30,000 IN PLEGES BY APRIL 1, 2026 IN ORDER TO COMPLETE THE WORK BY APRIL SCHOOL VACATION:

  1. Refinish the gym floor with new markings for basketball and volleyball;

  2. Replace the outdated Y logo;

  3. Crow’s Nest and donor signage.

PHASE II: RAISE $200,000 IN PLEDGES BY JUNE 1, 2026

  1. Six new adjustable basketball hoops for younger players;

  2. An electronic dividing curtain to create two program spaces;

  3. New electronic bleachers and paint.
