Adventure camps are geared towards kids who want a little more oomph out of their summer experience. Each week brings with it a new set of opportunities, be they by land, sea, lake, bike, or open road. Our camps are designed to challenge campers, offering them experiences that they may never have been presented with before. All of our camps will meet at Camp Knickerbocker (the mother ship!) on Monday mornings. Campers should pack a lunch each day, as you never know where in Maine, or New England for that matter, we’ll be when hunger strikes. Bathing suits and towels are just as important as food. But above all else, campers should bring a healthy desire to have an awesome time, and a willingness to try new things! All of our camps are open to children ages 11-14, and are limited to 13 campers unless otherwise specified. For more information, contact Kris Roveillo, Camp Director. 2008 Adventure Camp Ages 11-14
Backpacking at Cardigan Lodge June 23 - June 27 Come explore wonderful Cardigan Lodge. Built by the Appalachian Mountain Club as one of New Hampshire’s first ski lodges and newly renovated in 2005, Cardigan Lodge is set on a 1,200-acre reservation owned and managed by the AMC. Cardigan Lodge offers an extensive trail network for hiking and cross-country skiing, a nature trail and swimming pond. The Lodge is located in Alexandria, N.H. surrounded by 5,000-acre Mount Cardigan State Forest. Check out the Lodge on-line at: http://www.outdoors.org/lodging/lodges/cardigan/index.cfm
Acadia Adventure June 30 - July 3 Campers will depart Monday for three nights in Acadia National Park. Once there, they’ll set up camp at either Blackwoods or Seawall Campgrounds and spend their days exploring one of this country’s finest treasures. Highlights will include watching the sun rise over Cadillac Mountain, taking a dip in pristine Echo Lake, admiring the mighty Atlantic Ocean come roaring into Thunder Hole, walking barefoot on Sand Beach, and experiencing the joys of sitting around a camp fire.
Mariners Camp (in collaboration with Ocean Classroom Foundation) July 7 - July 11 The first of two of our collaborative camps with Ocean Classroom Foundation is a unique combination of land and sea adventures. Campers will spend Monday and Tuesday at Camp Knickerbocker’s Baldwin Adventure Center, a state-of-the-art high and low ropes course facility. There, they’ll work on team building and personal goal setting activities. Wednesday brings with it a day sail on the Spirit of Massachusetts windjammer. With their sea legs now firmly beneath them, campers will depart Thursday for an overnight sail on the 125-foot vessel.
Basking in Baxter July 14 - July 18 The ultimate Maine experience! After spending Monday at Camp K getting our gear together, we’ll head up I-95 o Millinocket and then beyond, into Baxter State Park, perhaps the Pine Tree State’s most pristine wilderness. After setting up base camp, we’ll take in some hiking, enjoy the natural rock slide at Slide Dam, do some swimming at Tote Pond Beach, and maybe even rent canoes and paddle around the park’s many lakes. Who knows? You might even catch sight of a moose.
Mountain Biking July 21 - July 25 Get off your feet and onto your wheels. This week will begin with two days of riding trails in the Boothbay region. Once we know how to ride as a group and have our gear-switching down, we’ll hit the road with stops planned at Camden Hills State Park to the north, and Bradbury Mountain State Park to the south. Campers can bring their own bikes or use one of our Trek 820s.
Water Week July 28 - August 1 Just as the name implies, this week is all about getting wet and having fun with water. Campers will spend time on Lake Knickerbocker getting accustomed to canoeing skills, including T-Rescues and swamp canoe races (always a good time!) We’ll also paddle West Harbor Pond, and the highlight of the week is a sea kayaking trip with Tidal Transit Kayaking Company.
Voyagers Camp (in collaboration with Ocean Classroom Foundation) August 4 - August 10 Ages: 12-15 This is the ultimate sailing experience. Campers stand watch with the professional crew and learn the time-honored arts of the seafarer including sail handling, steering by compass, knots, splices, and navigation. Campers will explore the marine environment of coastal Maine and discover the sea’s rich diversity of life, history, and lore. They will have the pleasure of observing marine wildlife in their natural habitat, visit historical sites and museums, as well as share sea shanties and stories. Registration for Voyagers Camp is being handled by Ocean Classroom. Please contact Alyson Graham at 207-633-2750, ext. 100 or by e-mail at agraham@oceanclassroom.org.
A Walk in the Woods August 11 - August 15 **This camp is limited to 8 campers** We’re off to the White Mountains. After a day of teambuilding at Camp K, day two has us departing for the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Highland Center. From there, we’ll spend our days hiking and exploring the woods. Our itinerary isn’t too strenuous; we have all day to hike about 3-4 miles to our next destination. Come check out the greatest views New England has to offer.
Trail Mix August 18 - August 22 Trail Mix is just a perfect name for this week’s camp. Why? Because you’re bound to get a little bit of everything. We’ll explore some of the Boothbay Region Land Trust’s properties. Swimming is a guarantee, and we’ll definitely try our hand at air rifle and archery. You can count on being at the Baldwin Center for some ropes course action and whatever you do, don’t bet against a little mountain biking and/or canoeing. |
